Suwon is an ancient fortress city 48 km south of Seoul and the provincial capital of Gyeonggi province. The walls were constructed in the latter part of the 18th century by King Jeongjo in an unsuccessful attempt to make Suwon the nation's capital.A wall once surrounded the whole city but industrial and residential expansion in recent years has seen the city spill out beyond the enclosed area. Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon over 5 km in length, the fortress wall averages 9 m high and its bulwark of stone and brick is considered the
masterpiece of Korean fortress construction and it has a great variety of military facilities you cannot find at other fortress. The fortress wall was designated as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1997.
