Gongju was the second capital of the Baekje Kingdom established in 475 A.D. After its first capital south of the Han River near Seoul was abandoned, Gongju is now a small town, but there are still many of Baekje treasures in evidence. Among them, King Muryeong's Tomb is the most famous. That Paleolithic man lived near Gongju some 20,000-30,000 years ago is evidenced at a cave site in the vicinity. The tools, weapons, and other artifacts unearthed are similar to objects found in Manchuria and the lake Baikal region. |
