Chungju, the province's second largest city is an overgrown farming community that exudes a country atmosphere. The Chungju hydroelectric dam, the country's newest and largest, was recently constructed a few kms from the city center. The building of the reservoir transformed the huge rocky farmland into a beautiful lake which is called Chungjuho Lake. Now Chungjuho Lake is one of 2 in the country with inland commercial ferry transportation. Ferries start from the terminal above the dam and run to Shin Danyang. Leaving approximately every hour throughout the day from spring to fall, and 5 times a day during
winter, the 53 km are covered in 2 hours. All seats allow good views of the passing scenery. A silky smooth trip over the broad lower half, the lake narrows and squeezes between high rock cliffs and finely sculpted promontories as you approach Shin Danyang.
