Hahoe Village, 24 ㎞ west of Andong is one of the few officially sanctioned "traditional villages" in the country. It occupies a knob of land that causes the mighty Nakdong River to form a double-S loop. Hahoe, with its markedly pastoral and rustic atmosphere, has produced many scholars and government officials, and is the wellspring of a folksy masked-dance drama. It is one of the few remaining examples of a classical Joseon Dynasty Confucian village layout. The fewer than 500 inhabitants consider their community a living symbol of tradition

and not a showcase like the Korean Folk Village near Suwon. Because of its cultural value, it has kept itself relatively free of the cloying hands of the Saemaul Movement's modernizing programs, and you truly get a feeling of stepping into old Korea when you arrive at Hahoe.
