Mt. Songnisan is only two or three hours from Seoul by expressway. A quarter mile away, embowered in pine woods, stands the imposing Beopjusa Temple. Beopjusa Temple was once the largest temple in Korea and known to have hosted some 30,000 priests at one gathering. That several thousand priests were in regular attendance is today evidenced by the huge iron cooking pot in which the monk's rice was cooked. All around the temple tower the mountains, exquisite in their fall array of brilliant leaf colors, or their summer garb of pastel wild flowers. Beopjusa Temple houses several famous works of art. The

temple's most striking feature is the 33m-high (108 feet) Maitreya Buddha statue. It was cast in one mold and is the largest standing bronze Buddhist figure in the Orient.
