Gwangju is the capital of Jeollanam-do Province and the sixth largest city in the Republic of Korea, with a population of 1.1 million. It lies almost four hours directly south of Seoul by car or train and it is connected with Daegu to the east via the '88 Olympic Expressway. Gwangju National Museum was built to house the precious Chinese porcelains which were salvaged in 1976 from a Chinese trading ship that was wrecked at Sinan 600 years ago. Songgwangsa Temple, southeast of Gwangju, is one of the largest temples in Korea. It was first built in the late Silla Era, but fell into disrepair until 1205, when it was reconstructed. Over the years this temple has produced a large number of famous monks.
